ARE ALL YOUR ROUÉ RUMS PRODUCED IN-HOUSE?

Yes, we import our own high-test molasses (HTM) sugar from Mauritius and raw demerara sugar from Guatemala to make our Roue rums. We don’t use flavoured sugar or table molasses to make our rums. We do not just import bulk industrial rum and add flavorings and colorings like some craft rum producers do.

WHY ARE SOME OF YOUR RUMS CALLED RUM-NOVA, AND NOT JUST RUM?

Rum-Nova are our entry level rums, and are generally aged less than one year. We have developed our own unique Nova Scotian Rum-Verschnitt (German for “cut-rum”) process of making younger aged rums taste like they are aged for several years. Rum-Nova is also a play on words, in the sense that our rums are born and raised in Nova Scotia.

THE ORIGINAL ROUÉ BEVERAGE FACTORY WAS LOCATED ON THE HALIFAX WATERFRONT, AT THE FOOT OF SALTER STEET . HOW COME YOU DIDN’T RESURRECT THE COMPANY NEAR ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION?

The Halifax waterfront is now owned by the Waterfront Development Corporation. They only lease land for 99 year leases. So we re-purposed a 1930’s historic building in downtown Windsor, NS into our “waterfront” distillery. Windsor was once housed one of the largest wooden schooner shipyards in the province.

HOW COME YOUR RUM LABEL IS SHAPED LIKE A SAIL?

The label design is a silhouette of the iconic main sail of the Bluenose. W.J. Roué designed the Bluenose . He was also the Roué Beverage plant manager and co-owner during the time he designed the Bluenose, so the Bluenose is a major part of our brand legacy.

WHY AREN’T ALL OF YOUR RUMS AVAILABLE IN THE NSLC?

Retail liquor distribution is essentially a government controlled, taxpayer funded monopoly in Nova Scotia. Sometimes it can take several years for local products to gain access to their distribution system. In the meantime, visit our local retail partners or order online. We offer free shipping across Canada for orders over $150.00.

WHAT TYPE OF STILL DO YOU USE TO MAKE YOUR RUM?

We use a Dutch designed stainless steel iStill. It is both a pot and column still in one. It is the only iStill in the Maritimes. All electric, highest marks on safety, super consistent from batch to batch, and can run from our iPhone! You have to see it to believe it.

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU HAVE THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF AGING RUM BARRELS IN ATLANTIC CANADA?

Yes, any given month, we have over 75 barrels of aging rum, in ex-bourbon, ex-Maryland rye, ex-Gretzky whiskey, ex-Tennessee, ex-brandy, ex-rum, ex-dessert wine and even ex-maple syrup barrels.
